仕事でVoDの説明を聞きに行った。
要はVoDの最大のライバルというのはレンタルビデオ屋なので、
そこにどのくらいまで近づけるか、というのがポイントらしい。
以下特長についてそういった観点で書いてみた。
僕はアナログ人間なので、当面レンタルビデオ派でいるつもりで、
VoDになんて興味ないけど（なんて言ってていいのか？）
他の人達はどう思ってるのかな？
早送り・巻戻し→これはできてた。それと途中で見るのをやめて
続きを後日みるのも可能です。途中で止めた部分のタイムコードが
サーバにセーブされるというしくみらしい。
画質はどうかというと、MPEG2の3.5Mbps（ソフトにもよる）
ということだから、ビデオよりはよくてDVDよりは悪いと
言ったところ。見た目はいい勝負。
最大の違いはDVDは可変ビットレートなので、例えば、爆発
シーンなど、動きが複雑で早いものについては思いっきり
レートが上がり、そうではないシーンは下がるということ
になるらしい。IPで送るときはそれをやると回線品質を要求
されるので、うまくない、ということで固定になるそうだ。
価格はそのサービスの場合1本400円で2泊3日くらいだと
いうこと。この辺りは遜色ないかな。ちなみに僕がよく
利用しているTSUTAYAは380円で1週間。（新作は100円up）
最大のネックはSTB（セットトップボックス）だ。これを
4年リースで考えると、基本利用料1,000円くらい取らないと
やっていけない額。
それと、ビットレートについては、確かに2Mbpsくらい出れば
かなり画像はキレイだと思ってくれていいけれど、そこまでの
（常時安定しているという意味で）回線を用意するとなると
ADSLではほとんど無理だろう。
CATVで環境のいい所か、もしくは光か。
ちなみに今回お邪魔した会社はある賃貸アパート大手の会社に
環境を提供している会社で、新規に建築されるアパートには
全て光回線を入れてあるので、あまり回線品質は問題にならない
ということ。
結論を言ってしまえば、もうちょっと待てということなんだろう
けど、思っていたよりVoDってできるよね。
